Schizophrenia, part I

Introduction of Two Approaches

Random Thoughts Main Page - Exploring Ascension Section - What's New?

This page gives an introduction to the concept of Schizophrenia as it is used in the psychiatric world and the way I prefer to see it. I wrote my Psychology thesis on this subject (in 1996, called: Schizophrenia: A Physical Disease of the Mind?) and I think the time has come to try and integrate that knowledge with the present explorations in the astral planes.

Before I go on I would like to stress that nothing is certain in this field of Schizophrenia. There are arguments for the medical model as there are arguments against it. I have spent a lot of energy in my past 'fighting' the medical model, but I don't want to revive that fight again. In connection to the explorations on this site I think the least popular vision about Schizophrenia is the most fruitful. I don't want to go into the question: who is right and who is wrong? I just adopt a perspective that is nothing more than that: a perspective which I think has the most potential in dealing with this phenomenon called 'Schizophrenia' in relation to the worlds most of us are unable to see.

For those who have been diagnosed as schizophrenic I would like to say that you should ask yourself if you really want to go on and read this page, for it contains untested information of a rather alternative nature. If you are unstable and susceptible to voices, spirituality and stuff, this information might aggravate your condition. I don't want to be held responsible for any psychosis induction because of the contents of these pages. You have been warned.

For those who are related to people diagnosed as schizophrenic you should also ask yourself if you really want to read these pages. You might get angry or upset for two main reasons: either because you feel connected to your schizophrenic patients, relatives or friends and any potentially psychosis activating contents is undesirable. Or you could get upset because it strongly goes against much of what you have been told about this 'psychiatric disease'.

DISTORTED BRAIN &rarr DISTORTED THOUGHTS: THE MEDICAL MODEL
I will only briefly describe the medical model for my main focus is the exploration of the astral planes (in order to see if it can be cleansed in a respectful and responsible way) and the medical model doesn't provide many possibilities to do this.

By far the most popular view on Schizophrenia is that is in principle disease of the brain. Because the brain is unable to produce certain neurotransmitters (chemicals in the brain used to transfer signals between neurons, brain cells) or is producing far too much of certain neurotransmitters.

It is said that certain people have a propensity towards developing schizophrenia, but it will not always show, because often there need to be certain circumstances that activate this disease. Often these circumstances are related to severe or chronic stress or important life events.

Once the disease surfaces it produces positive symptoms like for example hallucinations or delusions , and often negative symptoms like lethargy and apathy. The most important mode of treatment is through the administration of drugs (like Zyprexa, Risperdal, Clozapine, Seroquel). Furthermore it is advisable to give people who are diagnosed as schizophrenic education about their condition and how they can try to live with it most succesfully: have a structured life, avoid stress as much as possible. Psychotherapy is not advisable and is even considered counter productive: it could lead to a new eruption of psychotic phenomena.

People diagnosed as schizophrenic should realize that they cannot really be treated in the sense that they can be cured. They must accept that they will have this disease for the rest of their lives and need to take some medication in order to suppress the delusions and hallucinations.

DISTORTED THOUGHTS &rarr DISTORTED BRAIN: THE THOUGHT MODEL
The model that is going to be used to further explore 'schizophrenic' phenomena I have dubbed the 'thought model'. The main idea of this model is that thoughts are at cause. When people for some reason develop awkward thought forms this leads to the formation of certain brain behavior like the over- or underproduction of certain neurotransmitters (like dopamine, serotonin).

One of the biggest differences with the medical model is the flexibility: thoughts can be changed or altered, thereby possibly changing the activity of the brain, and as such potentially cause the removal of the 'symptoms' of this disease. By altering the thoughts one could cure oneself of schizophrenia.
