In April 2005 this (slightly edited) email landed on my doormat:
After reading through your site, I was alarmed to hear what you have said about the mahatma and the ascended masters and it's negative affects. I have recently undergone a study in ascension and I have had many positive affects through my guided meditations and study. How does a person know whether the belief and following is beneficial or not?
I refer to the page on the Mahatma.
I would appreciate any feedback.

Gibbon's Response:
Dear C.,
So, you are following an ascension course and you wonder how to know for sure if that ascension method is beneficial for you or not. As you know the SSoA-perspective warns people who are trying to ascend for the influences of the Ascended Masters.
How to tell which perspective is most beneficial to your own ascension process? I guess you can approach this question in various ways:
1.Biological changes. From the SSoA's perspective ascension requires biological changes in the physical body. These changes are described quite elaborately in some articles. You might want to take a look at Turning Crystalline? to see what I am referring to. If you are working on your ascension and there is no single change at all, after one to two years, then you could start doubting if you are actually ascending. From the SSoA's perspective there can be another reason why hardly any physical change occurs and that is because you don't have the right DNA-lineages available in your ancestry. Not everyone is able to ascend as far as the other.
2) Sovereignty. Another test could be if you feel you are becoming more sovereign in your thinking or that you are becoming more dependent. If you feel that you are giving your power away to forces outside of you, then I would tend to think you are not ascending, but are falsely ascending, and you are giving away your energy to beings like those 'ascended masters'. If you get the idea that these beings want to be adored like gods, you could ask yourself if this is the right way to ascend.
3) Feeling. How does it feel? Does it really make you feel good or are you in some way doubtful about the whole thing? Perhaps you could pendulum to see if your body is aligned with what you are doing.
4) In the SSoA's perspective the ascended masters can be of help in the lower vibrations. So, it could very well be that you can ascend a little because of these ascended masters, but they would only be useful in the lower vibrations. If you start feeling all kinds of aches in your body, or if you feel tired most of the time it might be that you are falsely ascending and that your life-energy or chi is stripped from your etheric body.
5) Historical background. What does your teacher have to say about the history of mankind? How much sense does it make to you?
6) Love-and-light. In the SSoA's perspective the love and light terminology is commonly used to numb people into believing that everything is going alright and that we will all enter the fifth dimension in 2012 and you are very special and you are a lightworker etc... If the level of love-and-light-terminology is too high I would doubt the sincerity of the messages.
So, C. I guess this is it as far as I'm concerned. I think in the end only your own experience can tell you what approach is most beneficial for you.
I hope to have been of some help,
Regards,
Gibbon.
